Landmark Remains Family-Owned – A Remarkable History
Oregon has a rich history of family-owned and operated businesses. Callahan’s Mountain Lodge has been a part of that tradition since 1947, when Don Callahan chiseled the first wood and stone building out of the solid rock on the summit hillside, one mile north of its current location.
Ron and Donna Bergquist purchased the Southern Oregon landmark from the Callahan family in 1996, to carry on a rock-solid continuously family-owned and operated Southern Oregon business now in its 68th year.
After years of transforming the restaurant into a destination resort, a devastating fire occurred in 2006, resulting in a significant loss for the community. The fire did not deter Ron and Donna from their vision and commitment to a future for Callahan’s. The Bergquists were inspired by the resounding support and encouragement from guests near and far to continue the Callahan’s legacy.
The owners and their family have developed a sense of connection and identity with the business and with the community. These connections will be sustained as the lodge transitions to Jennifer Self, Donna’s sister, and her family. The good news is that Callahan’s will remain family-owned and operated!
Jennifer has dedicated her life to service. Whether running non-profit schools for children or programs for the local YMCA, she has always focused on people. She led fundraising for local animal organizations to better the lives for shelter animals. Through a national organization called Pet Partners, she combined her love of people and animals to improve human lives through animal-assisted therapy. Her latest efforts also include managing a horse barn and all the other farm animals. Meantime, she is Mom to four wonderful children. Jennifer has been with Donna and Ron since they purchased Callahan’s and her children have grown up with the business and its traditions.
Jennifer’s husband, Tim, has an extensive background in internet marketing strategies. Having designed, owned and operated multiple companies specializing in real estate marketing and software development, he brings commitment and business skills to ensure the future success of Callahan’s.
Together they both share a love of people, animals and family traditions. Tim and Jennifer bring three horses, three dogs, two goats, two bunnies and two cats. “We expect that the goats, Romeo and Bella, will quickly become mountain favorites among children and adults.”
With an experienced and dedicated staff and the ongoing support of all of Southern Oregon and Northern California, Callahan’s will continue to be “Ashland’s Mountain Experience” and “A Special Place to Spend Precious Time” for many more years to come.
